Material FAQ

Questions About the Material

Short, careful answers. Where the honest answer is "it depends on the species and the process", we say so and explain why.

Is bamboo a wood?

No. Bamboo is a giant grass in the subfamily Bambusoideae. It has no bark, no cambium and no growth rings. Its strength comes from long vascular bundles concentrated toward the outer wall, which is why it splits so cleanly and why timber joinery rarely transfers directly.

Are all bamboo species interchangeable?

No. Guadua angustifolia, Phyllostachys edulis (moso), Dendrocalamus asper and Bambusa vulgaris differ in wall thickness, diameter, density and natural durability. A species ideal for laminated boards may be poor for round-pole structure, and vice versa.

Can bamboo furniture be used outdoors?

Only with suitable species, preservative treatment and detailing. Keep it off wet ground, shelter it from direct rain where possible and expect untreated surfaces to grey in sunlight. Laminated boards need adhesives and finishes rated for exterior use.

What is strand-woven bamboo?

Crushed bamboo fibers are saturated with resin and pressed under high pressure into very dense blocks. The result is extremely hard and suited to flooring and worktops, but it depends heavily on adhesive and no longer shows bamboo's natural structure.

How is bamboo protected from insects?

Starch attracts powder-post beetles. Traditional responses include dry-season harvesting, soaking in water to leach starch, smoking and heat curing. Boron salt treatments are widely used today. Good detailing that keeps the material dry remains essential.

Is bamboo always a sustainable choice?

Not automatically. Fast regrowth from the root system is a real advantage, but plantation practices, adhesive content, processing energy and shipping distance all matter. FSC certification is available for bamboo, and minimally processed local culms usually have the strongest case.

Is "bamboo fabric" really bamboo?

Most soft bamboo fabric is regenerated cellulose produced through a viscose or lyocell process. The plant is dissolved, so the material's structure does not survive. Regulators such as the U.S. Federal Trade Commission have acted against misleading claims.

How should I care for bamboo objects?

Avoid soaking and dishwashers, wipe with mild soap, dry promptly and renew oil or wax finishes when surfaces look dry. Move round-culm furniture gradually between very different humidity levels to reduce splitting.

Are the images on this site real products?

No. Every object image is an illustrative 3D render made to explain techniques. They do not depict documented products, brands or the specific buildings mentioned in our articles.
